A label that tells a thousand stories…

A label that tells a thousand stories…

___

Many people are drawn to a beautiful wine label, and we often tell ourselves, we shouldn’t judge a wine, by the label…but we’re all human! As we eat with our eyes, we too, like pretty wine labels, and ours have a story to tell.

Let’s quickly jump back in time a little to share with you a little-known story about our beautiful family-owned vineyards. Our Longview Vineyards are located on the South Eastern Ridge of the Mt Lofty Ranges, the “long view” we speak of, are of the views (or vista) that stretches out toward the Southern Ocean and Lake Alexandrina. Our little patch of paradise is perfectly suited to both red and white grape varieties, but our reds (grown on the northern slopes) thrive in this location, consistently, and slowly ripening to perfection.

These northern slopes, is where, way back in 2008, the family first bottled our most-prized shiraz – The Piece Shiraz. To this very day, our flagship wine The Piece Shiraz is still sourced from those single vineyards on the northern slopes.

Now in the present, and reflecting on the past 10 vintages of The Piece Shiraz, we’ve featured packaging and beautifully designed wine labels adorned with street art. Each year we’d invited artists from around the world to create large-scale works of art, on site. Interpreting and amplifying our beautiful vista and sense of place in their own special way. Each year we would select a winning artwork to feature on the label of the next vintage of The Piece Shiraz.

Looking ahead, and after 10 excellent vintages and labels, our new release 2019 The Piece Shiraz has taken a slightly different approach. The 25+ year old vines selected for our flagship wine uses great care to isolate select rows of the best Shiraz fruit from our single vineyards. All the berries are hand-harvested, and meticulously hand-sorted.

Similarly, we’re now hand-picking one artist to interpret the Longview ‘vista’ to feature on each of the new vintage labels. The 2019 vintage we are featuring Dan Tomkins, an artist from Adelaide, Australia. Dan’s use of natural hues, broad, gestural, and energetic brush strokes (Dan’s original piece was using oil on wood fibre) to beautifully capture the Longview vista on the new release wine labels and packaging.

The wine inside the bespoke bottled pieces of art, is also one to capture your attention. A bouquet of florals perfume with Jonquils, jasmine, and carnation, with secondary notes of blue fruits, white pepper spice and aniseed.

The palate is layered, rich, long, and yet finishes with a crunch of taut berry fruit interlaced with natural acidity and very fine silky tannin.

The shiraz clone used (1654) is known to carry hints of light pepper, alongside the use of 500L puncheons, allows the wine drinker to savour the fruit quality and elegance without an overwhelming oak veil.

If you’re lucky enough to secure a few bottles of the 2019, you are safe to cellar them for 10-15+ years, the tannins will silken further and develop. And when you do get the chance to finally enjoy this wine, we suggest the perfect meal to best enjoy a glass of art, is rich, slow-roasted Osso Buco, teamed with polenta.
