The Long View…

Longview Vineyard Macclesfield is so named after the stunning vista from its elevated sites to the majestic Coorong, bordering the Southern Ocean.

Taking the long view is also a key part of our viticultural and winemaking philosophy – incorporating vision, patience and persistence as we work to mould the best expressions of quality and style from our unique site.

We acknowledge the Peramangk people as the traditional custodians of this land and work to emulate what the Peramangk achieved in nurturing and sustaining the land over millennia.

Since European colonisation in c1837 until c1995, the Macclesfield region was dominated by mixed farming including potato growing, tobacco, sheep, beef & dairy cattle.

The region was also famous for its marble, whereby lenses of marble are traceable from Macclesfield to nearby Paris Creek over an 8 km distance. This marble, ranging in colour from white and cream to blue-grey and pink is known geologically as Fork Tree Limestone and is Early Cambrian in age.

The pink marble became the inspiration for our small-batch Macclesfield range of wines, which have rapidly become recognised as classic interpretations of the best the Adelaide Hills has to offer.

It wasn’t until 1995, via Adelaide entrepreneur Duncan McGillivray that vines made their debut at Macclesfield – at Longview Vineyard. Once ready, Longview’s first vintage was 2001.

The Longview Vineyard changed ownership to the Saturno family in 2007, commencing an era of continuous reinvestment in the vineyard and facilities.

The Saturno family has a rich history in hospitality and quickly identified the opportunity to provide a more complete experience, incorporating wedding facilities, quality accommodation, authentic Italian-inspired food and more recently a Day Spa. The Longview operations are overseen by Peter Saturno and a small expert team of department managers.

In 2011 Longview launched its most ambitious event – The Piece Project, annually inviting 4 street-artists to Longview to create huge murals, live, in front of a massive crowd. Each winner is awarded, not only a cash prize but the prime real-estate of the Longview’s  premium Shiraz label – “The Piece” Shiraz. This  began a 10 year program of creating a super-premium, highly collectible wine and limited edition pieces of art.

A decade on, art and landscape continue to be associated with The Piece Shiraz, now with an acclaimed artist annually invited to paint their unique interpretation of the Longview Vineyard vista.

The Longview Vineyard continues to evolve and adapt, working to fulfill our quality aspirations, to meet wine lovers’ expectations and to address the challenges and responsibilities of modern farming.

Always taking the long-view.
