Iron Knob Riesling 2019
TOP GOLD – 2018 Riesling Class at the Sydney Royal Wine Show.
This illustrious Riesling block boasts a larger than normal ironstone component in its bedrock, hence our Iron Knob was born.
Germanic in style; dry, yet floral. Aromas of white blossoms and stone fruits greet you before giving away to a superb minerality, borne from ironstone. Finishes up clean with a lengthy and zesty lemon and lime crispness.
Drink now to 2023.

The Iron Knob block is situated on the south-east facing slope of our estate, this block consists of iron stone soil throughout the top soil, hence the name ‘Iron Knob’. This 2019 Riesling shows floral aromas with subtle nuances of talc and honeysuckle. The iron stone soil produces a flinty mineral character with a fine powdery palate of lemon and lime. The palate finishes with thrilling natural acidity which balances beautifully with the fruit giving the wine a long-textured finish
2019 vintage came with substantial challenges including lower rainfall by approximately 40% and one of the hottest summer periods on record; yet we managed to process some exceptional fruit. Early shoot thinning was performed on 80% of the vineyard to ensure yields and canopy density was kept to a minimum due to early disease pressure. This resulted in canopies which handled the extreme dry and hot conditions during the ripening period and hence flavour development was not compromised. The flowering period was exposed to excessive weather conditions like hail and excessive windy wet periods. In some varieties, we saw up to 50% crop loss mainly due to poor set. Across our 65-hectare vineyard, yields were down by approximately 20% at harvest
The Riesling was spur pruned to low bud numbers in winter and then shoot thinned early in spring to keep bunch numbers to a minimum. This ensured we achieved the shoot vigour required with minimal irrigation inputs. The fruit was hand harvested on the 7th of March at a 11 Baume. The canopy held up extremely well through the heat with minimal damage. Due to the dry conditions pest and disease issues were non-existent and harvest was not dictated by wet weather events which can be an issue in normal years. At the winery, the fruit was then chilled to 9˚C and then juice separated and skins pressed; only free run juice used for this wine.
