Vista Shiraz Barbera 2017

Vista Shiraz Barbera 2017

Longview’s sense of place is reflected in Varied Inclines Slopes Terrain & Aspects.  Given that Australia is known internationally for its unique blends and forward thinking wine-making, it makes sense to use Australia’s hero red variety, Shiraz and blend it with one of Italy’s finest, Barbera.

Longview’s Shiraz has all the hallmarks of a cool-climate style – spicy, savoury with crunchy berry fruit.  The Barbera provides a juicy, cherry-like brightness and taut acid backbone that gives the wine a wonderful structure.

Longview’s Shiraz has all the hallmarks of a cool-climate style—spicy, savoury with crunchy berry fruit. The Barbera provides a juicy, cherry-like brightness and taut acid backbone that gives the wine wonderful structure. It is a wine that is extremely drinkable young but will develop well over 5 years.

2017 was a very cool vintage with intermittent rainfall, prolonging the ripening period and enabling good fruit flavor development without high sugars. Shoot thinning was conducted a month before budburst to improve shoot length and control yields. Bunch thinning prior to flowering and then again during veraison, ensured improved airflow and reduced bunch variability further improving fruit quality.

All fruit is hand-picked. Both varietals were de-stemmed and crushed before a cool, open co-ferment for 21 days. Maturation occurs in French Oak Hogsheads – 3rd and 4th use and bottled after 12 months.

Made in the same style as the 2016, and with a similar flavour profile, but this 2017 is a step up in quality.
The perfect take-anywhere wine. Or any-day-of-the-week wine. The packaging is attractive and it tastes just right. It’s a sure-footed mix of sweetness and savouriness, meatiness and fruitiness: cloves, deli cabinet, graphite and black cherry flavours combine a treat. Well shape, well made, well delicious.

It’s not a deep red but it gets all the basics right. Good tannin, appropriate, acidity, ripe fruit and just enough character to keep you interested without making you worry. Cherries, red and black. Undergrowth. Twiggy herbs and chalk tannin. Well cut, well polished.

4 out of 5 Stars: Tony Love – The Advertiser. “Unlocking the combinations from this picturesque Macclesfield vineyard must be a fun job, with this latest release bringing together one hero variety with a lesser known Italian native grape associated mostly with the Piedmont region – so it loves hills. This is a 90 per cent shiraz blend that steps into a more savoury, minerally place with just a small portion of the barbera without sacrificing its vibrant crushed berry salad set of flavours in a bright and cheerful 13.5% alc slurpy style.”

Campbell Mattinson – The Winefront. “It sees all French oak, none of it new, but the shiraz portion sees “newer” oak than the barbera, if that makes sense. You’d generally call it a ‘fun and fruity’ style though it has a touch more class/style than that. It’s a dry red, a pot of stewed cherries and plums gently whispered with spice prior to serving. Some reduction, some cloves, some florals, some meat. None of these characters are overt but they are there, chattering away. It’s at the top end of the tumbler class.
