The Piece Shiraz 2016

The Piece Shiraz 2016

The graffiti pieces that adorn the label are only the very beginning of the story. Longview has created limited, collectible art on the bottle and what’s inside is equally so.

Every vintage, we take great care to isolate select rows of the best Shiraz fruit, then go a step further by hand-picking only perfect bunches based on flavour. The yields are small but the rewards are plentiful resulting in only 200 dozen of the best Shiraz we could make.

Whole bunches in small open fermenters deliver delicacy to the blue and red fruit spectrum; and anise and clove combine to give this wine its spicy decadence. Subtle French oak influence ensures the fruit harvested remains the star of this experience.

Decant if consuming now but will reward those patient enough to cellar 10+ years.

An elegant and complex wine which displays aromas of baking spices, maraschino cherry, anise and coffee coupled with restrained pencil shavings of French oak. The structured palate displays flavours of cherry, red currant, mulberries and fresh acidity. Dusty tannins complement the finish which is dry and clean with tremendous length. Cellar for 15 years or more, with careful decanting when opening.

The Shiraz parcels for ‘The Piece’ were hand-harvested in late March. Fruit from selected rows and even panels, were chosen from five different blocks on the vineyard to assemble this wine. The selection process is based on vine balance according to yield, berry size, bunch weight, canopy health and most importantly fruit flavour. These five blocks of Shiraz historically outperform others, hence helping the selection process and create variability for blending options at the winery. These parcels were hand-harvested from 7am through to 12pm and then immediately stored in cold rooms.
Each 1-ton parcel was open-fermented with approximately 15% whole bunches and kept separate right through to blending, after remaining in new and old French oak hogsheads for around 18 months. Approximately half the barrels are then individually chosen on wine quality for the final blend.

2016 ‘The Piece’ Shiraz

Dave Brookes, The Adelaide Review – “It’s a ripe, concentrated wine; a wine with a lot in common with the blockbuster Aussie wines of old. Full-throttle dark and black fruits, dredged in baking spice, dark chocolate and licorice and definitely no shortage of punchy, clove-laden oak nuance. Still, for all that horsepower, it’s soft of tannin and bright of acid for a wine that packs in so much flavour. It’s a powerhouse wine but in the best way possible.” – read more.

92 Points – Toni Paterson, The Real Review. “A supple, concentrated, medium-weight wine with raspberry flavours and attractive spice. Bright, balanced with intense red fruit.”

92 Points – Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Real Review. “Almost a caricature of the full throttle Oz shiraz the world loves, this is a ripe, appealing wine, velvety and satisfying. It has tons of flavour and soft tannins in seamless harmony.”

Silver Medal, International Wine Challenge 2019

Dan Traucki – “The wine itself is another masterpiece. It has ample aromas of plums and some dried herbs with just a hint of forest floor. A big, powerful, well-structured palate which is smooth and rich with an excellent tight finish. Great now but will continue to evolve over the next few years. VERY SOPHISTICATED and brilliantly packaged.”

2015 The Piece Shiraz

Adelaide Hills Shiraz Trophy, International Wine Challenge 2018 – Ripe, fresh, blackberry fruit. Aromatic and ripe, with firm tannins and powerful flavours. Lovely acidity, freshness and aromatics. Rich, dense, but beautifully balanced. Very good length.

96 Points – Campbell Mattinson, Halliday Wine Companion 2019 – “Powerhouse red. Rich, meaty, perfumed, lashed with oak, dashed with sweet spice. Adelaide Hills shiraz with the lot. Tannin is fine, infused with coffee, and in control. It is red to be reckoned with, and it’s going to mature – quite gloriously- over a long period.

96 Points – Huon Hooke, The Real Review – “Deep red/purple colour. Big, earthy, dry spice aromas, the palate sweet-fruited and lush. A big, voluminous. almost opulent shiraz, with a sweet fruit core and appealing spicy list on the nose. This has intensity and elegance, and some cool-grown spicy charm, good drive and length. Delicious wine.”

Dan Traucki – Wine Assist – “Each year a Piece of graffiti artwork is selected for the label of this limited edition super premium wine. The bottle is not only artwork on the outside, but also on the inside. Hand picked, bunch pressed, made in open fermenters, these grapes are given the Rolls Royce treatment to produce this superb wine. It is redolent with red berry, spice and anise aromas and an uber tight delicious palate that makes it a big bold cool climate Shiraz that needs plenty of cellaring or double decanting if drinking now. AMAZING”.
