Nebbiolo Saturnus 2017

Nebbiolo Saturnus 2017

In over a decade only five Nebbiolo Saturnus wines have been produced. These are the years where we feel that the wines truly reflect the heritage of the variety and the vineyards terroir.

Planted in 1995, Longview has one of the oldest continuously producing Nebbiolo vineyards in Australia. With 4 clones in the ground, including the famed 230 and 111 Rosato clone, Longview is committed to perfecting Italy’s ‘King of Grapes’ in a style that is varietally correct, yet distinctly Longview.

Alluring and intense fragrance of licorice root and dark cherry with nuances of violets and roses. Spicy and delicious; the palate is medium to full-bodied and complex, with rich, savoury fruit, refreshing acidity and structured dusty tannin. The wine finishes with a dried herbal note, silky and balanced.

Spring conditions were significantly drier than normal leading to good early canopy management with even budburst and early even shoot growth. The flowering period had minimal moisture and temperature extremes leading to exceptional set allowing us to manipulate the yields early. The dry conditions continued through early summer helping control vine vigour resulting in balanced canopies. From veraison through to harvest, the weather was ideal with minimal moisture and cool nights resulting in excellent fruit flavor development and acid retention. Exceptionally dry conditions towards the end of vintage minimised disease pressure allowing for perfect ripening for later ripening varieties like Nebbiolo.

The fruit was hand harvested on the 12th of April and NEB1, 3 and 10 were chosen for the Nebbiolo Saturnus. Clone 230 and clone 1-11 together making up 80% of the blend and for the remaining 20% we used clone F12V13. A larger parcel of clone 1-11 was chosen for this vintage as the field samples looked exceptional.  The intake analysis of the fruit was considered perfect with 14.2 Baume, 3.3 pH and 7.5TA. The fruit was harvested during the coolest part of the day and delivered to the winery immediately.

Hand sorting bunches occurred in the field during harvest to ensure all quality parameters were met. Vinified using traditional techniques and left on skins for around 3 to 4 weeks, the wine is then matured in a 6 and 7-year-old French 500l puncheons and bottled without fining or filtration.

2017 Nebbiolo Saturnus

93 Points – Gary Walsh, Winefront – “The fratelli Saturno, proprietors of Longview, are committed Nebbiolo fanciers, and they’re making inroads into producing some very good wines from the most noble of all red grapes. Great work Pinchies. Beautifully made, elegant and pretty style, with no clumsy oak or over extraction. Red cherry, liquorice root, almond, potpourri, and spice. Medium bodied, fresh and juicy, all supple red fruits with gentle fine grained tannin, a sort of sugared almond flavour in there too, which adds to the charm. Finish is shapely, licked with soft but sure tannin, and a perfumed raspberry aftertaste. No question of it being Nebbiolo either. Lovely. Excellent now, but autumn will come if left to age for a few more years.”

91 Points – Huon Hooke, The Real Review – “Medium brick-red hue with obvious development in the colour. The bouquet is likewise mellowed and showing some matured softness and dried herb, earthy, pot-pourri secondary characters as opposed to primary fruit. The palate is soft and mellow, medium-bodied and quite intense, finishing with abundant soft, fine tannins. There is a warmth of alcohol on the back-palate and the wine has richness and concentration, despite not having any real primary fruit remaining. Of its style, it is a very appealing drink. Hard to predict its future, but it’s enjoyable on the day.”

2015 Nebbiolo Saturnus

93 Points – Huon Hooke, The Real Review. “Medium brick-red colour, forward-developed, and the bouquet is very appealing in a floral, dried herb, dried flowers kind of way. Balsamic herbs. Spicy and delicious; the palate is medium to full-bodied and complex, with rich, ripe, savoury fruit and the most appealing texture on the tongue. It fills the mouth and lasts long on the farewell. Good density and gravitas. An excellent wine, which will come into its own with food.”

Silver Medal – 2017 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show.

93 Points – Gary Walsh, The Winefront. “Cherry and ripe strawberry, aniseed and fresh mint, light spiciness with Nebbiolo’s beautiful signature writ large all over it. Medium bodied, quiet succulence of cherry, fine dusty tannin drags it along nicely, cool acidity, and a red fruited, tea and new leather aftertaste. Hats off. They’ve got this one just right.”

2014 Nebbiolo Saturnus

94 Points – James Halliday’s Wine Companion 2018. “It certainly comes in a handsome bottle, and is equally certainly varietal. The tannins stay under control, and there are violets and rose petal aromas. It’s on the edge of greatness, and would be a fine match for all foods italian.”

94 Points – Tony Love’s Top 100 Wines 2017. “It opens with a delightful red rose fragrance and lovely oaky spice then, as you sip a bit further, a light, gastronomic bitters note appears as the palate tracks with a bit of grunt though still with a bright step. Decanter or cellar for further pleasure.
